Brest Coach Eric Roy Reflects on Team’s Performance Against PSG in Coupe de France – Frustration, Ambition, and Future Plans

Despite all the miracles he has achieved since his arrival on the Brest bench, this one has unfortunately escaped him. However, the Bretons coach can be satisfied with a team which came out of the Coupe de France by putting up a great battle on the PSG pitch, this Wednesday February 7 (3-1 defeat), where it had thundered the thunder a few days earlier.

Are you proud of your team?

ERIC ROY. Very proud. It’s a feeling that drives me after these two matches at the Parc des Princes. As long as we were tied in numbers, the team played their luck to the fullest, tried to produce some play, to put them in difficulty. We were also put in difficulty. We realized that we were more in danger when we had the ball and lost it. We didn’t have that bit of success, an outgoing post that could have been in… I’m satisfied and happy, the team made its supporters proud, who experienced great emotions.

Is there any frustration after this match?

There was already this feeling of frustration at half-time. You lose 2-0 feeling like you had a good match, but every mistake is paid for in the face of so much talent. My biggest regret is the expulsion of Lilian (Brassier). The disappointment and frustration are there. The team was courageous and showed certain virtues, values that are ours. We don’t deny ourselves.

You have always hurt PSG this season, what is the key?

It is obvious that if you want to produce play, take risks in the build-up and you lose the ball in your 40m, you can quickly be penalized. Luis would like his team to have more of the ball. In the first half, we had possession. A match is always a balance of power, you want to put things in place and sometimes you don’t succeed. This PSG knows how to control the ball, have a lot of possession, and at the same time, if they are in difficulty and they don’t have control, they can do very badly. This is the paradox of this team. When you see Barcola, Mbappé, Dembélé leave… Wow! The efforts it takes to catch up with them! This team is capable of dazzling performances, that is its strength.

“We’re a bit on the fence, we don’t have an infinite workforce”

Do you have the ambition to play in Europe?

I’ve always said it, we talk about it with the players. We have ambition. When I prepare for a match, it is to win it. We came today to qualify. We tried to do it, but we lost. And we will prepare all our matches to win them. We are so far from the end of the season, you will be able to clearly show your ambitions if, in money time, you are still there. We’re on a bit of a tightrope, we don’t have an infinite number of staff. We have a big fight awaiting us on Sunday in Clermont.

You have a mental trainer on your staff, what role does he play?

Our mental trainer is not part of the staff but comes from time to time to talk with the players who wish. We don’t force it. From the moment the players take this step, it must bring them things. This is undoubtedly the case in other clubs. We try to take all the parameters into account, that’s part of it and it’s very important for certain players.

Do you feel PSG is ready for Real Sociedad?

Yes. I don’t see how Real could resist these offensive bursts, this ability to make incredible differences. Whether we have the ball or not, transition or not, control or not… I feel them gaining strength and we will of course be supporters of PSG. We hope they will pass this round.

What do you think of this mistake by Brassier on Mbappé, which costs him the red card?

I don’t think it’s a blood move, he thinks he’s going to get the ball and he’s going too fast. He lacked discernment, he made a mistake five minutes before… But hey, things happen so quickly… There was no intention to hurt, Lilian is not a bad boy. He is learning, he remains a young central defender with a lot of future and qualities.

It was the return of the Hakimi-Dembélé doublet on the PSG side this evening, which was very dangerous: how do we prepare against these two?

PSG without this doublet and with it, it is not the same team. When I saw the XI, I said to myself: they have the best team, proof that they respect us a lot and are looking to qualify. We had prepared to have a few more people inside the game, with this diamond, to try to anticipate Hakimi’s calls inside the game. But hey, if he goes twice as fast as you… (laughs). We still showed good qualities.
