Breonna Taylor murder, convicted former Kentucky policeman

(ANSA) – ROME, NOV 02 – A federal jury has convicted a former Kentucky police detective, Brett Hankison, of excessive use of force in the murder of Breonna Taylor during a 2020 drug bust, thus violating his civil rights. The American media writes it. The woman was killed in a failed police raid and her death sparked mass demonstrations against racial injustice. The jury of six men and six women deliberated for more than 20 hours over three days before returning a guilty verdict — the first conviction of a Louisville police officer involved in the killing. “The Department of Justice will continue to defend the civil rights of every person in this country to be free from unlawful police violence,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke after the verdict. Taylor and her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, were sleeping around midnight on March 13, 2020 when they heard a noise at the door. Walker, believing it was a break-in, fired his gun, wounding an officer. Police, who had obtained a controversial no-knock warrant to make a drug arrest, fired more than 30 shots, fatally wounding Taylor. Hankison claimed he fired his gun to protect his colleagues. Hankison’s guilty verdict carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. The sentence will be pronounced on March 12th. (HANDLE).
