Brentford beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in Premier League after controversial refereeing

London. Brentford benefited from a fortunate rebound and a disputed refereeing decision to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday despite striker Ivan Toney not being included in the squad because he is a potential transfer.

Yoane Wissa scored the winner in the 76th minute after Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson handled Nathan Collins’ deflected shot into the Brentford striker’s legs.

It was the second time Brentford had taken the lead despite their opponents playing better. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Palace equalised through an Ethan Pinnock own goal.

Mbeumo’s goal was doubly frustrating for Palace as it came just minutes after they had had a goal disallowed by the referee.

Eberechi Eze took advantage of Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken being out of the game with a long free-kick down the right which hit the back of the goal as Brentford players waited for him to clear into the box. But referee Sam Barrott flagged off a foul on Palace midfielder Will Hughes on the edge of the area.

The decision angered Palace manager Oliver Glasner but VAR was unable to review the play because the referee blew his whistle before the ball entered the net.

Shortly afterwards, Mbeumo ran with the ball down the right flank and cut inside Marc Guehi to beat the goalkeeper and shoot.

Palace continued to control the game and equalised when Colombian Daniel Muñoz headed in a cross which Pinnock pushed into the back of the goal as he attempted to clear the ball.

Before Collins’ winner, another goal was ruled out for the visitors for offside.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank said before the game that he had left Toney out due to “transfer interest” and that means the England striker could be sold this month.
