Bremen’s Battle Against Criminal Clans: Unveiling the Clan File and Zero-Tolerance Strategy

Bremen – They rob, smuggle, beat and blackmail. Regardless of the laws and rules of our country.

Criminal extended families, colloquially known as “clans”, enrich themselves with illegal means, create fear and are difficult to catch. In Bremen, too, groups like the notorious Miri clan keep causing unrest.

► Criminal offenses: In 2022 there were 736 cases in Bremen in which at least one participant could be assigned to clan crime. Overall, the police assigned 364 suspects to this milieu.

► Offender profile: Most of the suspected offenders are male (83%). The average age is 29 years. Only 43% have German citizenship.

► Proceedings: No proceedings are being conducted against clans as such, since mere family membership does not constitute a criminal offence, the police explain. “However, numerous proceedings were conducted in 2022 in which several members of an extended family were accused of a joint act,” said a spokesman for BILD.

Business areas: The clan strategy usually includes doing “legal business”, which is used, for example, for money laundering. According to investigators, the car trade and car services (repair, rental, etc.) are particularly affected. Gastronomic activities are also widespread (shisha bars, restaurants, delivery services). Real estate transactions are also often a source of income for the gangsters. There are no exact figures.
