Bremen politicians agree: Staff shortage in day-care and schools

Bremen (dpa / lni) – According to the unanimous assessment of leading politicians in the state of Bremen, there is a shortage of staff in day-care centers and schools. CDU top candidate Frank Imhoff therefore called for more money for education to the detriment of other areas. “We have to be prepared to place claims elsewhere,” said Imhoff in Bremen on Wednesday. The background was a sometimes heated panel discussion between candidates in the Bremen state elections. The election is on May 14th.

The top candidate of the Greens, Maike Schaefer, said that a lot of money had been used in recent years to expand day care centers and schools. She advocates speeding up the construction of all-day schools so that there is more support for children whose parents are overwhelmed.

Prime Minister Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) was absent from the discussion for family reasons, according to the organizer. He was represented by the economic policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, Volker Stahmann. Stahmann said that schools and teacher capacities had to be expanded. Support in schools should be improved.

“The education department has more money than ever,” said the top candidate of the left, Kristina Vogt. There is money in the household for each student. But in times of teacher shortages, the money is not called off, Vogt reported. The aim is to integrate lateral entrants more easily than before. Above all, you have to start with urban development so that districts are socially mixed.

FDP top candidate Thore Schäck also advocated the inclusion of career changers. He sharply criticized the SPD: “We’ve seen long enough that you don’t know how to train people well.”

The association had invited family entrepreneurs to the discussion.
