The number of candidates for the Bremen police is decreasing significantly. In 2020 there were 2036 applications, or about ten for an apprenticeship – in the current year there have been 1375 applications so far, not even six for apprenticeships, reported the “Weser-Kurier” of Bremen (Monday). “This worries us,” a police spokesman said. In addition, people who have already engaged in police training in Bremen also drop out. According to the report, the Bremen police have been suffering from a shortage of personnel for years.

In 2020, 203 candidates were hired, last year there were 226, in the new year there should be 230. There are two hiring dates for the current training year: 1 October 2022 and 1 April 2023. The first date causes less problems, police spokesman Bastian Demann said. The recruitment date at the beginning of April next year is worrying, for which there are still too few interested parties. The deadline for submitting applications which expired last week has been extended indefinitely.

The spokesman explained: “Compared to the previous year, the most suitable candidates are resigning for the appointment on October 1”. So far, 72 candidates who have been accepted have changed their minds, so they are not starting their training. The reason is probably alternative offers. According to Nils Winter, president of the Bremen state association of the police union, the Bremen police are in the bottom third nationwide when it comes to paying.

According to the report, the number of applications is also decreasing in the neighboring state of Lower Saxony, where about 900 police candidates will be hired on 1 October: in 2020 there were 4932, last year 4609 and so far this year 4224. ongoing is not yet completed, said a spokesman for the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior.
