Bremen parents want to donate daycare contributions – news from Bremen

For the first three months of the year, parents in Bremen are reimbursed the daycare fees. Some parents now want to donate the money to families in need (Caroline Seidel / dpa)

The Senate has decided to reimburse parents for the daycare fees for the months of January to March because childcare was often restricted during the pandemic. Some parents of crèche children, who have not experienced any restrictions in real terms, now want to donate the money they get back from the city to families in need.

The initiative was launched by Miriam Rothmund, mother of two children in Bremen-Mitte. “Our one and a half year old son goes to a day nursery and there are only nine children in his group. For him, the care in the emergency care mode was and is not restricted at all, he could go to daycare as normal, ”she explains. “So now I am getting compensation from the city for a service that I have received all the time and that I have used,” says the 39-year-old lawyer. Therefore, her family wants to pass on the reimbursed money – in her case 430 euros per month – to needy families in Bremen.

Miriam Rothmund wrote a letter to parents of daycare centers in Bremen, calling on them to follow their example and donate part or all of the reimbursed contributions, often with the purpose of “Bremen families helping Bremen families”. To this end, Miriam Rothmund sought advice from the Bremen family network about which local aid organizations could be supported with this campaign. She cites the Child Benefit Foundation, several Bremen women’s shelters and the Friends of Bremen Children in Need as examples of organizations to which parents could donate the money. At the same time, it encourages parents to think about their own ideas and to find out which initiatives – perhaps in their own district – they would like to pass on the daycare fees to.

The initiative is supported by the Central Parents’ Representation of the Bremer Kita-Eltern (ZEV), says Petra Katzorke: “We had already thought about something similar, but we weren’t so quick and are now happy about Miriam Rothmund’s initiative.” the letter from the initiator to parents, the Bremen family network informs about this on its website. With her appeal, Miriam Rothmund is addressing parents who do not urgently need the money from the daycare reimbursement themselves. “Unlike many others, we are not on short-time work and I have not lost any wages,” says the 39 year old. “It feels a bit strange that we still get money on top.” The lawyer contacted several aid organizations in Bremen. “The organizations were really happy, the management of a women’s shelter told me, for example, how great the need is and that in the pandemic, many consultations are difficult. That moved me very much. “
