Bremen is considering heated emergency shelters for the winter

Bremen is considering warm shelters for the winter – if homes actually stay cold due to the gas shortage.

According to a media report, in view of a possible gas shortage, Bremen is considering setting up warm accommodation for the coming winter. “In the course of averting danger, we are planning emergency accommodation for Bremen and Bremerhaven if the worst comes to the worst,” said Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) to the “Spiegel”.

What these will look like is not yet certain. “In any case, the buildings will be connected to a secure energy supply, such as a district heating network,” said the head of government.

“We assume that it will not come to that”

Bovenschulte emphasized that this is a disaster protection scenario that comes into effect when people can no longer stay in their homes because the gas supply is interrupted for a long time. “We assume that it will not come to that.”

The head of government also told the “Spiegel” that there could be protests in Bremen as a result of the significant increase in energy prices. “It is quite possible that people will take to the streets. Unfortunately, we cannot rule out that they actually have reason to do so if the social situation continues to deteriorate.”

In view of the high energy prices, Bovenschulte spoke out in favor of another direct payment for relief this year. “Such an energy flat rate II should be paid per capita, to every adult and every child,” he said. “This brings people with low and middle incomes much more than the abolition of the so-called cold progression.”
