In an action that had been prepared for weeks in downtown Bremen, homeless people were vaccinated against Corona on Friday. A total of 170 homeless people and employees of the Inner Mission as well as other associations, facilities and clubs took advantage of the offer, said Katharina Kähler, head of the homeless assistance department at the Inner Mission. “The action has been well received,” she said on Friday evening. The German Red Cross had set up a vaccination street in a social café near the train station with three mobile teams. The vaccine from the US drug and care product manufacturer Johnson & Johnson was inoculated.

Kähler reported that in the past few weeks, those who have stayed in the accommodations of various providers in the urban area have been informed of the upcoming date by the staff. Street workers from the Inner Mission have also spoken to people on the street and will be asking the homeless in the coming days whether they want to be vaccinated. “That was the start. We are planning a repetition with the health authorities in two to three weeks, ”said Katharina Kähler.

“We are now protecting people who have to reckon with a particularly difficult course because of their living situation and their often poor state of health,” said Health Senator Claudia Bernhard (Linke). Social Senator Anja Stahmann (Greens) assumes that unvaccinated homeless people will again and again arrive in Bremen in the coming weeks and months. “We are currently considering whether and how we can offer further dates for people who are new to Bremen or who do not stay overnight in our accommodation,” she said. Similar campaigns have already taken place in Bremen over the past few days at other contact points for the homeless and for employees. “The vaccination creates security on both sides, which is of inestimable value for social work in close contact with people,” said Anja Stahmann.

In the Café Parrot, where the vaccination took place, street workers were also present during the vaccination campaign so that the homeless could meet familiar faces. “The association for medical care for the homeless spontaneously offered a consultation on Saturday for those who might experience side effects,” said Katharina Kähler. “That’s our pleasure.”

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine was chosen because a syringe is sufficient for this drug. The vaccinations were originally planned for the beginning of April, but had been postponed twice due to the technical debate about the use of the vaccine. According to the health department, other vaccines are expected to be used at the next appointments. According to media reports, the Standing Vaccination Commission will recommend on Monday that the US vaccine only be used in people over the age of 60.

It is estimated that around 600 homeless people live in Bremen, most of them spend the night in homeless assistance facilities. Corona infections of homeless people or residents of the accommodation have so far only become known in Bremen in a few cases. Covid 19 infections are also limited to individual cases among employees.
