According to Education Senator Sascha Aulepp, there is currently a shortage of fewer teachers than last year. And this despite increasing student numbers. In Bremerhaven, 126 positions are vacant.

At the start of the new school year, 75 of the 4,300 teaching positions in the city of Bremen were still vacant. This was announced by Bremen’s Education Senator Sascha Aulepp (SPD). She was nevertheless satisfied, as the number of students in Bremen had grown massively.

1,100 more students than in the past started the new school year at the general education schools in the city of Bremen. This meant that 60 additional first grade classes had to be set up. According to Aulepp, another 30 classes were needed at the secondary schools. In total, around 61,000 children and young people now go to school in Bremen.

Teacher supply rate in Bremen is 98 percent

In view of the increasing number of pupils, new teachers are needed for additional students. These were also recruited by making it possible for people to enter the teaching profession from other backgrounds and by quickly offering trainees in Bremen a job, explained the Senator for Education. In addition, there were 30 secondments in which teachers were transferred to another school where they were more urgently needed. However, no one was transferred against their will.

Overall, the teacher supply rate in Bremen is around 98 percent. In addition, replacements had to be organized for almost 400 teachers because they were chronically ill, on parental leave or maternity leave. For Bremerhaven, the number of vacant positions has been available for a week: there are 126.
