Refugees from Afghanistan will be able to bring close relatives to Bremen and Bremerhaven under certain conditions. The state admissions program will apply from August 1st, the Bremen interior authority announced on Monday. If the local authorities agree in advance, those affected must apply for a visa at a German embassy in one of the countries bordering Afghanistan.

Bremen (dpa/lni).

The Bremen Senate had already decided on the state admissions program in December 2021. The federal government stopped the program for the time being because there were indications of attempts at abuse when issuing visas in the German embassies. Residence permits have recently been issued again.

The program is aimed at people in Afghanistan and the neighboring countries who are seeking protection and whose close relatives already live in Bremen. This includes spouses, first-degree relatives (parents, children) and second-degree relatives (grandparents, grandchildren or siblings) as well as their spouses and minor children. The family in Bremen must be able to secure the livelihood of those affected for up to five years. This does not include costs due to illness, pregnancy, disability, childbirth or the need for care.
