The Bergamo company confirms itself among the protagonists of the championship started in Monte Carlo. In addition to supplying the braking system for the Ford M-Sport and Hyundai Motorsport teams, Brembo is responsible for the development of the equipment intended for the Rally2 class Fiestas and i20s
With the departure from Casino Square and the night-time holding of the first two special stages, Thoard – Saint-Geniez and Bayons – Bréziers, the 92nd edition of the Monte Carlo Rally officially began, the inaugural event of a WRC World Championship which sees among the protagonists also some companies, such as Brembo, and several Italian crews, starting in the WRC-2, and in any case with Rally2 or Rally4 category cars. While waiting to see one of our compatriots at the start in the premier class on a permanent basis (in Sweden Lorenzo Bertelli and Simone Scattolin will be at the game with a Toyota Yaris Rally1) it is the Lombard company that takes care of the supply of its material and contributes to the successes obtained by the bearer of M-Sport Ford Wrt and Hyundai Motorsport, two of the three official teams currently competing at the top of the discipline.

The braking systems are developed and produced in Stezzano, in the province of Bergamo, with the exception of the pads and pedals, present on the Ford Puma Rally1 entrusted to Adrien Fourmaux and Grégoire Munster, and on the Hyundai i20 Rally1 of Thierry Neuville, Ott Tanak, Andreas Mikkelsen, Esapekka Lappi and Dani Sordo. Complete supply, including the cast iron disc, aluminum calipers, pumps and pedals, also for the Ford Fiesta and the Hyundai i20 Rally2 which compete in the cadet series and in the various national championships. In particular, the collaboration with the Korean company was further strengthened following the team’s debut in the TCR with the i30. A profitable project for both parties and long-lasting which is leading to considerable results and very important development work. “A relationship with the teams, as regards data exchange, which is fundamental – they explain from the Bergamo company – these, in fact, are acquired from customers and Brembo usually receives them when there is a problem or when where a team is testing something new for which there is a need for detailed feedback on the component they are using and therefore a series of telemetry data is requested for subsequent analysis, first of all the values relating to temperatures”.
characteristics and set-up race by race
—
As for the cast iron discs that are used in asphalt races, such as Monte Carlo, Croatia, Central Europe and Japan, Brembo offers 370 mm packages at the front, with thicknesses of 30 mm or 32 mm, while at the rear the choice is 355 mm with a thickness of 30. According to data collected and released by the company, the Monegasque test, with its snow, ice and traditional verglas is on average demanding, but less so than in Japan, where operating temperatures are higher. For this reason, a correct set-up to be carried out from race to race, especially with regards to diameters, can be fundamental. The same goes for events on land, with the diameter of the discs being 300 mm, compared to a thickness of 25.4. The same ground system is also used on snow, in the Swedish Rally. “With regard to these values - Brembo specifies – to obtain good performance from a braking system (calipers) it should remain in a range lower than 180°, a temperature that must be measured as close as possible to the pistons and therefore to the brake fluid. As regards the discs, the optimal range goes from 450° to 600°. With reference to the pads, there are various solutions: if you adopt a very aggressive pad with a lot of initial bite but which heats the brakes a lot, after the first effective braking you risk finding yourself with a pedal that starts to become spongy, the system overheats and you end up ‘losing’ the brakes. Otherwise, as usual, you look for the right balance, improving the bite, i.e. the initial aggressiveness of the pad”.
the most complex rallies on the calendar
—
The most complex rallies in terms of braking system stress are those planned in Italy, scheduled in Sardinia from 30 May to 2 June 2024, Croatia and Japan. It should be noted that, as far as rallies are concerned, the disc material used is not carbon-ceramic, as it is too fragile for the impacts and strong stresses that represent one of the main characteristics of this discipline. Furthermore, carbon works at full speed and guarantees performance in a very narrow temperature range, which is impossible to guarantee in a rally where conditions are very variable.
