Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald: Löss-Hohlwege awarded as the highlight of wine culture 2022 – Kaiserstuhl nature garden and Freiburg state winery were honored by the German Wine Institute

The loess hollow paths in the Kaiserstuhl natural garden and the Professor Blankenhorn wine trail of the Freiburg state winery on the Blankenhornsberg were recognized last Wednesday (July 27th, 2022) by the German Wine Institute as part of an award ceremony in Bernkastel-Kues as the highlight of wine culture 2022.

In 2010, the German Wine Institute (DWI), together with the regional wine promotions, awarded 40 highlights of wine culture for the first time. The aim was to draw the attention of tourists interested in wine and culture to interesting contact points in the 13 German wine-growing regions, thereby encouraging them to visit the regions and thus promoting wine tourism in the regions. Due to its great success, the project was repeated in 2013 and it was already decided in 2019 to carry out the project Highlights of Wine Culture again in 2022.

An independent jury selected 14 wine-cultural highlights from over 50 suggestions this year. Among them two from Baden. The certificate was presented by the German Wine Queen Sina Erdrich at an awards ceremony in Bernkastel-Kues.

The requirement for the application was that the proposed highlights are in one of the 13 wine-growing regions, can be visited all year round and are open to the public.

The Hohlgassen are formed by erosion and the centuries-long use as a path. These natural monuments are more or less the contemporary witnesses of the paths trodden by the Kaiserstuhl ancestors and were created through centuries of use. With the kicking of the draft animals and the rolling of the wagon wheels, the existing loess subsoil was ground into powdery dust and at the same time trampled down. The rain did the rest and washed away the loess in streams. Loess Hohlwege are ecologically valuable habitats for many plants and animals, as they offer special conditions. So there are several reasons that justify this award.

“This award expresses the wine culture in our beautiful Kaiserstuhl-Tuniberg region in a special way,” says Benjamin Bohn, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Naturgarten Kaiserstuhl GmbH and Mayor of Vogtsburg.

The approx. 300 m long Eichgasse in Vogtsburg-Bickensohl with its 15 meters depth is the most powerful loess hollow alley in Baden-Württemberg. The Kaiserstuhl path or the Loess Hohlwege path around Bickensohl, for example, also lead through them.

Some of the few remaining hollow alleys in the Kaiserstuhl Nature Garden include:
– Disk Buck Alley | bickensol
– Schlichtengasse | youringen
– Stall corner alley | youringen
– tarpaulin alley | between Bickensohl and Achkarren
– Buntehalengasse | Boetzingen
– Dullentalgasse | Ihringen
– Hohlgassen near Endingen

If you would like to get to know and experience the loess hollow paths under expert guidance, the best thing to do is to contact the Kaiserstuhl tour guides at: www.kaiserstuehler-gaestefuehrer.de. They offer guided ravine tours and also organize tailor-made tours for groups. The topic of loess hollow paths is also addressed and clearly explained in the Kaiserstuhl Nature Center in Ihringen (www.naturzentrum-kaiserstuhl.de).

“The award is a great advertising medium for our beautiful Kaiserstuhl-Tuniberg region and we are delighted that two submissions from BADEN were able to score points,” says Ulrike Weiß, Managing Director of Naturgarten Kaiserstuhl GmbH.

Because the Professor Blankenhorn wine trail of the Freiburg State Winery on the Blankenhornsberg in Ihringen also received the valuable award.

The Professor Blankenhorn wine trail around the Blankenhornsberg estate provides a circular tour of the world of wine. At selected stations you can find out interesting facts about the beginnings of the winery and its development up to the characteristics of today’s state winery. On the walk through the Blankenhornsberg doctor’s garden you can find out information about grape varieties, viticulture and the climate at the Kaiserstuhl as well as many other special features related to the subject of wine.
