Even if the body needs more oxygen, for example because we train during sports, the respiratory rate adapts. “This is a vital process that initially takes place unconsciously,” says Barbara Nützel, a lecturer at the German University for Prevention and Health Management. In this way, the body ensures that it does not slip into an oxygen debt. Our cells need oxygen in order to generate energy.
