All hopes now rest on Joe Biden and the new light figure Kamala Harris, the first colored Vice President. The two don’t have time to celebrate. Mortgage No. 1: Containing the corona pandemic and stopping the collapse of the American economy are already a huge challenge. How they would be managed in the political vacuum up to the inauguration on January 20th is beyond the imagination. Mortgage No. 2: Biden’s self-image of wanting American society to be reconciled with itself cannot be doubted. However, it is not yet clear whether he will be able to do this. That essentially depends on how the Republicans sort themselves if Trump is only an undead in the parallel media world. The outcome of the impending dispute over the direction of the “Grand Old Party” will only partly depend on what the final majority in the Senate will look like. Trump, with his testosterone demeanor and messages of hatred, has been far too successful in attracting the Republicans to new classes of voters among Latinos, blacks and other minorities who succumb to the strong man attitude. After all, this polarization has given both candidates more votes for their parties than ever before. From this feeds the thesis that Trumpism is far from over with the defeat of Donald Trump.
