Using a breast pump to get your little one’s ASIP is of course commonly used, especially for breastfeeding mothers who work. By using a breast pump, mothers can collect and stock expressed breast milk so that the baby’s intake can be met.

However, there are those who say that breast pumps can be the cause of breast cancer, am I right? Take a look at the following facts, Mother.

Breast pump is the cause of breast cancer?

Speaking of breast cancer, almost one in eight women will develop some form of breast cancer in their lifetime. Mothers who breastfeed or pump may find that they are more conscious about the health of their breasts than at any other point in their lives because of the rapid changes that occur in the breasts while breastfeeding.

Although you may know that breastfeeding or pumping can provide protective benefits for the health of both mother and baby, there are other important facts to be aware of regarding breastfeeding and breast cancer.

Susan Hover, single surgical oncologist at the Moffitt Cancer Center say that there are various risk factors for developing breast cancer, many of which women cannot control. Regarding reproductive risk factors, breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer in women, said Dr. Susan Hoover, as quoted from the page Moffit.

“One very large study showed a 4.3 percent reduction in the relative risk of developing breast cancer for every 12 months a woman breastfed,” says Hoover. Another large review showed a 14 percent lower risk in women who had breastfed when compared to those who had never breastfed.

Hoover said this may be partly due to the fact that while breastfeeding, a woman may experience a delay in her menstrual cycle, which in turn reduces her lifelong exposure to estrogen. Hormones such as estrogen have been linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

A recent review of more than 40 studies revealed a 30 percent reduction in ovarian cancer risk when comparing women who breastfed with those who didn’t.

Breast pumps do not cause breast cancer

When breastfeeding, a woman will have fewer ovulatory cycles which is thought to reduce the risk of potential cellular and genetic errors that can lead to ovarian cancer. Hoover added that, like breast cancer, the longer a woman breastfeeds, the lower her risk.

Although a woman can develop breast cancer in her lifetime including while breastfeeding or pumping milk, there is no known increased risk during this time. Because, women may be more interested in the changes that occur in their breasts during breastfeeding, and they may pay more attention to the warning signs of cancer.

In general, breast feeding mothers will feel ‘full’ due to milk production or even blocked milk ducts. However, a lump that does not shrink or disappear after about a week should be seen by a doctor.

To get the health benefits of breastfeeding, mothers should have to do it exclusively, for at least six months, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research and WHO. This means that the baby will only receive breast milk, no water, liquids or other solid foods.

Evidence shows that the health benefits and reduced cancer risk become significant over the next six months. And, breast milk provides all the energy and nutrients your baby needs to grow and stay healthy.
