Breast cancer | Breast cancer symptoms | Early detection of breast cancer
Breast cancer still ranks first as the most common cancer in Indonesia with a very high death rate.
One of the causes of breast cancer is that the majority of survivors are diagnosed when they have entered an advanced stage, so the cure rate drops drastically.
In fact, the cure rate for breast cancer is very high if this disease is caught early.
Yukwe read the facts we need to know about breast cancer so that we understand the importance of early detection or regular screening.
The first symptom of breast cancer is not always a lump in the breast
Breast cancer occurs when breast tissue cells experience abnormalities so that their growth becomes uncontrolled and forms tumors. Cancer can grow and attack the tissue around the breast, and can spread to other organs (metastasis).
“Breast cancer symptoms “It can vary greatly, some cases do not show clear symptoms such as a lump in the breast when found,” he said Dr. Bajuadji, Sp.B (K) Onk, MARSConsultant Oncology Surgical Specialist from Mayapada Hospital Tangerang (MHTG).
“The initial symptom can be just a palpable lump the size of a pea in the armpit or no symptoms at all. Therefore, it is important for you, especially women, to be familiar with the shape and condition of your own breasts.”
According to American Cancer Society, unusual changes seen and felt in the breasts can be a symptom of breast cancer. In general, things that need attention are when there are:
Lumps, pain, changes in the nipple, changes in the condition of the skin in the breast area, lumps or swelling around the breast or armpit, which may or may not be painful. Even a lump as small as a pea can be a symptom of breast cancer. Then the skin and nipples seem to sink or pull inward, the skin looks reddish, thickened, and can also feel itchy. Nipple discharge can be blood or other fluids.
Dr. Bajuadji, Sp.B (K) Onk, MARS emphasized, “If it turns out that you feel there is a change or it’s not as usual, there’s no need to guess and worry about it yourself, it’s best to just consult a doctor. Because these symptoms do not necessarily lead directly to cancer. “Later, an examination will be carried out to be sure.”
Genetic factors can play a role in causing cancer
Dr. Jemmy Sasongko, Sp.B (K) OnkConsultant Oncology Surgical Specialist from Mayapada Hospital Surabaya said, “So far, it is still unknown how breast cells can initially turn into cancer cells.”
“But it is known that mutations in the BRCA gene increase a person’s risk of developing several types of cancer, one of which is breast cancer. This BRCA gene mutation is hereditary or can be inherited. So, a family history of cancer is also important for doctors and patients to know,” said Dr. . Jemmy Sasongko, Sp.B (K) Onk.
In Indonesia, currently the BRCA test can be done.
BRCA is the abbreviation of Breast Cancer gene or breast cancer-related genes. There are two BRCA genes, namely BRCA1 and BRCA2 and these genes normally function to suppress tumor/cancer growth.
In a few people, this gene is damaged, known as a mutation. In general, 12% or 1 in 8 women are at risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime.
However, in women with a BRCA1 gene mutation, 55-65% are at risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 70 years. And 45% of women with BRCA2 mutations are at risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 70.
Apart from genetic factors and family history, physical conditions and lifestyle can also be risk factors for breast cancer.
In fact, someone aged 50 years and over has a higher risk of breast cancer.
Meanwhile, if we look at gender, it turns out that breast cancer can occur in both women and men, although this is rare in men, namely less than 1%.
Conditions of obesity, exposure to radiation such as having previously received radiation therapy to the chest area, habits such as smoking and consuming alcohol are also risk factors for breast cancer.
It turns out that under 40 years of age can get breast cancer
Breast cancer often occurs in women 50 years and over. However, it turns out that breast cancer is also found in women under 40 years of age.
Although the number of young women (<40 years old) who are affected by breast cancer is less than 5% of the cases compared to older women (40 years old and above), but breast cancer patients at a young age usually have more severe conditions and are more difficult to treat because they will involving many aspects, such as fertility and psychosocial conditions.
Therefore, carrying out early detection or screening is important in preventing breast cancer because prevention is better than cure.
The easiest early detection steps can be done by: breast self-examination (BSE) and clinical breast examination (SADANIS).
A person can do BSE independently at home, while SADANIS can be done in health services or hospitals that have superior services for comprehensive cancer examination and treatment, such as Mayapada Hospital through the Oncology Center service which is available in all hospital units in the Jakarta, Tangerang area , Bogor, Surabaya and Bandung.
