Like a “bad Christmas present”. In December 2022, Finistère Florence Guélennoc performed a preventive mammogram for her 50th birthday: she had breast cancer.

During her treatment, she juggles between Quimper and Guilligomarc’h, on the Morbihan border. A goal “boosts” her: the New York marathon, organized on November 5, 2023. Her dream.

Running, an escape

“In my misfortune, I was lucky,” believes the executive assistant in the agri-food industry. The disease was detected early enough. “Everything happened very quickly. » The operation takes place in February 2023.

Running is his oxygen bubble. “Even when I was tired, I would run a few miles,” she says. Although she started practicing this sport “late”, when she was in her twenties, Florence Guélennoc has already participated in two marathons: that of Paris in 2000 and the Transléonarde in 2008.

New York represents a completely different challenge. 42 kilometers within the Big Apple, surrounded by 50,000 participants. The runner particularly fears arriving at Central Park, where “there will be some climbing”.

A family marathon

However, she will not be alone on the starting line. At his side, eight members of his family. They will not run together: “Everyone has their own level. » Without forgetting those who come to support them. In total, 19 members of the Guélennoc team flew to the United States.

On site, they will wear fuchsia t-shirts, in reference to Pink October, decorated with the logos of The League Against Cancer and the Kemper Institute of Being.
