Breast cancer, silent disease

On average, a little more than 100 cases per year have been identified, in some cases the disease is detected late

San Luis Potosí, SLP.- In recent years San Luis Potosí is at an intermediate level in cases and mortality from breast cancer, the latest statistics available is that the mortality rate remains around 20 women per 100,000 inhabitants During the last three years, what is really worrying is the screening part, since few women have a mammogram, which is why cancer is sometimes detected late, as reported by Dr. Jocelyn Bravo Ruvalcaba Deputy Director of Health Reproductive Health Services.

She stressed that during the Covid-19 pandemic, not only in breast cancer but in many check-ups that are carried out preventively, they were reduced by the pandemic, “we are in this reactivation but we still see that women’s fear of approach the health units and that is precisely what has been reflected in the decrease in care for women in terms of screening with mammography”.

Bravo Ruvalcaba pointed out that on average a little more than 100 cases per year have been identified, as for the non-entitled population that go to health services, there has been an average in recent years of less than 100 cases, even 50 cases, and This has a lot to do with the issue of screening, since fewer women go for a check-up, 15,000 mammograms were performed per year, and this has been decreasing as fewer women undergo screening, therefore there are fewer diagnoses.

“This worries us a lot because later they arrive with an advanced cancer, for us it is very important to promote regular and frequent mammography and examination of the mother so that we can identify the cancer at an early stage so that it has a solution and a good response to treatment. treatment,” he said.

Finally, he invited women to come to the health areas so that they can be taught to do a breast self-examination month after month, and 7 days after menstruation, a body scan must be done, particularly of the breasts. , and also those women who have a family history of cancer or who are 40 years of age and older should be checked regularly.
