Soursop, also known as graviola or soursop, has gained popularity in recent years due to its potential health benefits, especially in preventing breast cancer.
Originally from the tropical regions of America, this fruit is not only appreciated for its sweet taste and creamy pulp, but also for its medicinal properties that have been the subject of several scientific studies.
Studies support the anti-cancer properties of soursop
Several studies have suggested that soursop may have anti-cancer properties. A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry by the U.S. National Cancer Institute identified that certain compounds present in the fruit, called acetogenins, have the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Acetogenins work by blocking the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is essential for cell energy. By limiting ATP production, acetogenins may prevent the proliferation of cancer cells without significantly harming healthy cells.
Another study from Purdue University in the United States also found that soursop extracts were effective in killing breast cancer cells resistant to traditional therapies. According to this study, soursop acetogenins are even 10,000 times more potent than some conventional chemotherapy drugs, without the typical toxic side effects.
Soursop and its potential in cancer prevention
While these studies are promising, it’s important to note that most of the research has been done in laboratory settings or in animal models. Scientists are still exploring how these findings can translate into effective treatments for humans. Despite this, experts suggest that incorporating fruits like soursop into the diet may be beneficial thanks to its antioxidant properties, which help fight free radicals and reduce the risk of cancer.
The American Cancer Society also highlights that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can play an important role in preventing various types of cancer, including breast cancer. Although there is no “magic cure,” the bioactive compounds present in soursop could complement other preventive measures, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle and having regular medical checkups.
