TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Therapy or alternative medicine is sought after by patients breast cancer, although most were not positive. Generally, this treatment only makes medical therapy delayed so that the cancer ends up in an advanced stage.
Even though most of them were unsuccessful, the oncology surgeon at the National Central General Hospital, dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM), Sonar Soni Panigoro, said that breast cancer patients can try alternative treatments, including herbal remedies. It’s just that, there is a maximum period of time to try it.
“If you want to try (alternative medicine), don’t go past one month. Please have a limit if you want to try. Once there is no effect, just move (to medical treatment),” he said in a virtual discussion with the media, Saturday, March 20, 2021.
Treatment cancer medically, in principle, it would be better to do it at the earliest possible stage according to the type of cancer. Delaying treatment, for example because they want to use alternative methods first, could risk causing cancer cells to grow.
“The more delaying treatment, the cancer cells will definitely develop. In general, about 70 percent of patients come in an advanced state. From several studies, patients who are late arriving are at least half because they tried first. alternative medicine. None of them show results, be it herbs, herbs, (health equipment) jackets, “said Sonar.
The alternative treatment that the patient chooses includes because it is thought to have less side effects and less fear than surgery that causes scarring, chemotherapy that causes baldness or radiation which can make the patient’s skin darker.

On the other hand, the patient’s knowledge of disease progression is also in the spotlight, and is still the choice of alternative medicine.
In the case of breast cancer, for example, alternative medicine may suggest the patient that the tumor in his body has hardened and this is a good sign. In fact, it is actually bad news for patients because malignant tumors are getting bigger or growing.
“We, who are in medicine, clearly have decades of study. There are still many failures that we find in treatment. Not all treatments are successful. Breast cancer if the treatment is complete, a maximum of 75 percent is treated. 25 percent does not work because the drugs do not work,” said Sonar.
He reminded, if you suspect there is a lump in the breast that could be cancer, immediately consult a doctor for medical examination and treatment.
Generally, if the doctor suspects that the lump is cancerous, then you are advised to do a biopsy. If it is cancer, then treatment will be determined and generally surgery, after which additional therapy includes radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal or targeted therapy.
If breast cancer is already found at an advanced stage, for example, the cancer has spread to other organs, the doctor will provide palitiaf therapy to improve the patient’s quality of life.
