Tegucigalpa, Honduras.- One in eight women is prone to contracting breast cancer, according to the Honduran Foundation Against Breast Cancer (Funhcam).

“The World Cancer Observatory of the World Health Organization (PAHO) says that Honduras, in the last three years, the cancer “Breast cancer has taken first place after cervical cancer,” said Lía Bueso, president of Funhcam.

She added that the incidence of the terrible disease that threatens the lives of hundreds of women has increased: “Statistically, we have seen an increase of 45%.”

Bueso said that 61% of the women who receive care at the Foundation are single mothers and many neglect their health in order to fulfill their responsibilities.

She said that they face financial problems and sometimes have to pay for their transportation and work days so that they do not miss their appointments.

6

“When a woman finds one of these clinical signs such as nipple retraction, a lump or redness, she should seek help. We try to give this great message about the signs of breast cancer,” recommended the president of Funhcam.

She stressed that there is no age to suffer from this disease, but when a woman reaches 20 years of age she should self-examine her breasts to prevent the disease.

“As soon as they detect something, they should seek help and not leave it for the following month. Women have to learn to know their bodies and get an early diagnosis,” Bueso said.
