Breast cancer in the first person, in “I say”

Karina Cabrera Langa has long belonged to the group “Valkirias Rosas” from Villa Regina, she is a broadcaster and recently retired after several years as a teacher specializing in disability. Some time ago she began her participation in DIGO, the Río Negro editorial app. Through her program “A Pink Path”, she proposes weekly testimonials, ideas, recommendations and information related to the theme.

“A year ago, after the pandemic, I decided to resume the routine checkups that I had been putting off. It was there that they detected a tumor in my left breast”
comments Karina, who quickly underwent surgery at Cipolletti.

Breast cancer is the most common among women and continues to be the leading cause of death worldwide for them. In Argentina, around 21,000 new cases are detected per year and some 5,800 women die.

While she was going through the disease, Karina contacted “Valkirias Rosas”, a group of women who have gone through or are going through breast cancer and organized themselves to contain themselves and accompany each other. In addition, they practice group sports that provide benefits for their physical and emotional recovery. “We are women who want to offer the clear message that there is life after this disease”he argues.

“We feel that we speak the same language and go through the same situation. We not only raise awareness, but we share life. It is essential not to close yourself off. Being in contact with people who are experiencing the same thing is fundamental and revitalizing»

«When they tell you that you have cancer, the body paralyzes. With that feeling you pause emotions, dreams and projects. I believe that the important thing is to accompany us so that this paralysis is transformed into struggle, optimism and hope. Life is a super valuable path and in «Valkirias» we face together that challenge of improvement and perseverance».
The Civil Association is currently made up of around thirty women from the Alto Valle Este circuit. They stand out for their rowing activities in the waters of the Negro River, a fundamental practice for draining the upper limbs.
With the support of professionals in each discipline, women carry out numerous activities. They also practice weekly sports such as swimming and basketball.

During October, they develop an awareness program throughout the region: they give talks, promote recreational, training and sports activities. They have the collaboration of Dr. Roxana González, a gynecologist and Liliana Pagliaricci, a graduate in Bioimaging, who is the project manager and who currently coordinates them.

In addition, women visit secondary schools, participate in fairs, popular festivals and events, offer information to the media and to any space where they are summoned.
Immediate consultation upon finding a lump or hardness in the breast and regular consultations with the gynecology service are the best way to ensure early detection and control of the disease.

Karina took this health situation and decided to transform it into activism and awareness. «In cancer I learned that early detection is essential. It is crucial to carry the message that medical studies should not be postponed. There are no excuses, the time for your health has to be. I feel that things do not happen for something, but for something. I want to raise awareness and give testimony on the subject.
“Un Camino Rosa” is the name of the program led by Karina Cabrera Langa and it premieres every Wednesday on “DIGO”. “I am very excited to be in this space. I intend to show that the word cancer does not have to paralyze us, that there are always people who can help you. I want to arrive with clear and accurate information that allows raising awareness to prevent “.
