Like every year since 1994, fall marks the start of Pink October, the annual campaign to fight breast cancer. In Brittany, many events will take place to raise awareness of this cause. In the region, breast cancer represents almost a third of cancers affecting women.
The leading cause of female mortality, breast cancer represents 30.9% of cancer cases among women in Brittany. So in this month of Pink October, initiatives are multiplying to call for donations for research and raise awareness among women about screening.
Detected at an early stage, breast cancer can be cured in 90% of cases.
A clinical breast examination (observation and palpation) by a healthcare professional is recommended every year from the age of 25. The regional health agency recommends in addition to these appointments to carry out techniques d’auto-palpation to identify any possible anomalies.
Screening campaigns are also organized for women aged 50 to 74, who are invited to perform a mammogram every two years. In Brittany, breast cancer screening was generalized to the entire region in 2003 and has been managed since 2019 by a regional structure, the Regional Cancer Screening Coordination Center.

In 2021 and 2022, according to data from Public Health France53% of Breton women targeted by this system were screened.
