Throughout the year, the Mujeres que Viven foundation works in the prevention, awareness and care for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and that they require accompaniment, which is why this topic is not only worked on in October, as explained by the director of the group.
Patricia Pacho Ruiz said that the civil association works permanently on this issue, going to institutions to give talks on the importance of doing breast self-examinations, as well as encouraging women to go to a medical institution to have a mammogram.
For example, she explained that all year round, in their offices, located within the facilities of Águilas de Mexicali, on Calzada Cuauhtémoc, they give out vouchers to have a mammogram done in a private laboratory, free of charge.
Many people question that this is not very relevant because there are different institutions that do free mammograms, which Pacho Ruiz acknowledged is true, however, there are many women who are very private about their lives and their health, so they prefer to avoid going to a public building to get a mammogram, because there is still a lot of taboo towards the disease and the very study that identifies it.
“People say that it is free everywhere. And that is true, but the reality is that because it is a public place, they feel embarrassed and prefer not to go. On the other hand, in a private place, they feel safer doing it. It seems that doing it in a private place encourages you more, because we need women to be convinced. It is a study that bothers them. Some say that they are afraid that it will hurt, but it will hurt more to have a cancer diagnosis. Maybe they feel a little pain, but you have to do it.”said the director.
From Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they receive women who need support with an oncological wig, medication, the necessary management to achieve reconstructive surgeries, among other services.
