Breast cancer and cancer in women ǀ UKD

It is the most common type of cancer in women: 70,000 women in Germany are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Breast cancer affects the masses: around one in nine women will be diagnosed with it at least once in their life. The Federal Center for Health Education also assumes that another 26,000 women will be diagnosed with other women-specific cancers. These include cervical cancer, ovarian cancer or vaginal cancer.

On Saturday, October 26, 2024, the women’s clinic at the University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD) will inform those affected, relatives and interested parties on all questions relating to breast cancer and other cancers in women at its free information day. The experts are available for lectures and individual questions between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

A focus of the event will be innovations in surgical therapy and aftercare as well as in radiation therapy. Another key topic is fatique, i.e. chronic fatigue as a consequence of the disease and the therapy. Sina Heubrock, is an oncological nursing expert at the UKD and gives valuable tips for more energy and well-being at Fatique. UKD nutrition expert Martina Schwarzrock also provides insights into the connections between cancer and nutrition.

This year, too, special attention will be placed on the interdisciplinary care of cancer patients at the Düsseldorf University Hospital. Psychologist Annette Hopp presents the guidance program at the UKD, in which former cancer patients support those currently affected.

The team at the women’s clinic is therefore able to develop an overall concept for each patient so that it best suits their personal situation.

The UKD cooperates with its university center (CIO Düsseldorf) with the university hospitals in Aachen, Bonn and Cologne (Cologne) in the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO ABCD), one of the largest tumor centers in Germany. The CIO ABCD has been recognized as a top oncological center by the German Cancer Aid.

The university hospitals and medical faculties in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf formed an alliance in 2018 in the form of a joint cancer center. Since then, more than 200 clinics and institutes have been working together under the umbrella of the “Centre for Integrated Oncology Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf – CIO ABCD for short” to ensure the best possible cancer care for those affected in the region, but also current, innovative findings from cancer research to be transferred into clinical practice as quickly as possible.

The University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD) is the largest hospital in the state capital and one of the most important medical centers in North Rhine-Westphalia. The 9,500 employees in UKD and subsidiaries are committed to ensuring that over 50,000 patients can receive inpatient treatment and 300,000 outpatient care every year.

The UKD stands for international excellence in health care, research and teaching, as well as for innovative and safe diagnostics, therapy and prevention. Patients benefit from the intensive interdisciplinary collaboration between the 60 clinics and institutes. The particular strength of the university clinic is the close integration of clinical and research to ensure the safe application of new methods.

The medicine of tomorrow is being created at the UKD. Every day.
