BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is the abnormal and disorderly proliferation of malignant breast cells that leads to the uncontrolled growth of a tumor within the breast, which has the ability to invade other organs. It is considered the leading cause of illness and death from cancer among Colombian women. It also occurs in fewer numbers in men.

Physical activity, healthy eating, avoiding overweight, reducing alcohol consumption, as well as breastfeeding can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The signs and symptoms of breast cancer include:

  • Presence of lumps or lumps in the breasts or armpits
  • Tightening or swelling of part of the breasts
  • Redness or peeling of the nipple or breasts
  • Sagging of the nipple or changes in its position
  • Discharge from the nipple, in periods other than lactation
  • Any change in the size or shape of the breasts
  • Pain anywhere in the breasts or armpits
  • Swelling under the armpit or around the collarbone

If you identify any of these signs, please consult the doctor in your IPS.

Breast self-examination becomes a daily self-care and protection action that helps women to detect cancer early.

When breast cancer is detected early, a proper diagnosis is established, and treatment is available to act immediately and effectively, it increases the chances of a cure. The woman palpates her own breasts once a month, looking for abnormalities in their size or shape. The regular performance of this self-examination familiarizes the woman with the usual consistency of her breasts and will allow the identification of nodules or masses more easily.

In the General System of Social Security in Health —SGSSS— the technologies for the early detection of this cancer included in the POS are:

Clinical breast exam: It is recommended that women over the age of 20 have a clinical breast exam at least every three years and that after age 40, increase the frequency of the exam once a year. This exam must be performed by a trained healthcare professional.

Mammography: every two years to every woman between 50 and 69 years old.

In 2011, the POS was updated and new tests and procedures were introduced for comprehensive diagnosis and treatment including rehabilitation, palliative care and social support services for breast cancer.
