Breakthrough Study Reveals Promising New Treatment for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Including Alzheimer’s

A new approach has been found in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases

Scientists from the University of Leeds and Lancaster University conducted a study in which they carefully analyzed PDE4B, an intracellular enzyme that can break down the AMP molecule necessary for the intracellular signaling of a number of hormones, reports Dr. Peter.

Inhibiting PDE4B enzyme activity may have a protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease by reducing inflammation in the brain. Experiments with mice showed that individuals with genetically reduced PDE4B activity had strong memory. Using functional brain imaging, the scientists found that brain glucose metabolism was impaired in mice with Alzheimer’s disease, but in mice with reduced PDE4B activity, levels of glucose metabolism remained normal.

Experimenters linked this to a decrease in inflammation in brain tissue. The next step will be to find out which drugs that inhibit PDE4B are safe and effective for fighting dementia.
