A common illness can be stopped
Scientists at the University of Colorado conducted research and identified a new way to slow down Alzheimer’s disease, writes eNeuro. They found that inhibiting the Mdm2 protein could stop the damage to dendritic spines and synapses that occurs in neurodegenerative disease.
Scientists used rodent neurons in an experiment. It turned out that the effect of an experimental anti-cancer drug on the Mdm2 protein inhibits the functioning of neurotoxic peptides. They provoke neurodegenerative changes in Alzheimer’s disease.
Dendritic processes are responsible for receiving nerve signals. Against the background of Alzheimer’s disease, they are rapidly pruned.
Scientists intend to test the new method using various models. Trials are currently underway on anti-cancer drugs that may be effective against Alzheimer’s disease.
