U.S. police have arrested a former gang leader for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, making a breakthrough in a long-running cold case that has garnered public attention.
Shakur, a legendary rapper from New York, died at the age of 25 after being shot four times by a gunman in a car in Las Vegas.
On the 29th (local time), a Nevada grand jury indicted 60-year-old Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis on charges of murder with a deadly weapon.
Police said Davis planned the gun killings between his nephew and Shakur after they got into a fight at the casino.
Davis was arrested near his Las Vegas home in the early morning of Friday the 29th and is scheduled to appear in court in the coming days. Las Vegas police revealed his face.
Greg Kading, a now-retired Los Angeles police detective who investigated the Tupac murder case for several years, told The Associated Press he was not surprised by Davis’ arrest. “All the other direct conspirators or participants are dead,” he said, adding that Davis was “the last person standing” in the case.
Prosecutor Mark DiGiacomo described in court Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, as a “scene commander” who “ordered” Shakur’s death.
At a press conference held on the day of the arrest, police officer Jason Johansson said the police’s persistent investigative efforts “ultimately paid off” before explaining the circumstances that led to the suspect’s arrest.
Police said Shakur got into a fight at a casino with the suspect’s deceased nephew, Orlando Anderson, shortly before he was shot on September 7, 1996. He died in hospital a few days later.
Police showed hotel security camera footage to reporters showing Anderson being beaten. He said the incident led to retaliatory shooting while Shakur was in his car waiting at a red light.

Police added that it quickly became clear that this was a gang-related crime and that it had been reviewed several times.
However, this case was able to gain momentum again only after new information was revealed in 2018.
Police also noted that Davis “self-admitted” to media outlets that he was a passenger in the vehicle from which the shots were fired.
“Tupac Shakur’s family has waited for justice for 27 years,” said Sheriff Kevin McMahill, who was visibly emotional at the press conference.
“There were a lot of people who didn’t believe that the Tupac Shakur murder case was important to our police force. I want to tell you that it never was.”
“The goal of Las Vegas police has always been to hold accountable those responsible for the violent murder of Tupac,” the sheriff added.
