Breakthrough in negotiations between Verlinden and police unions

An agreement appears to be in the making between Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) and the police unions. There is an average salary increase of 70 euros net.

The four police unions met again today with Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V). About a month ago, the unions organized actions that caused great hindrance, because the negotiations about a wage increase and end-of-career schemes were not progressing enough for them.

Earlier, Verlinden already decided that police officers will be able to keep their favorable pension scheme in the coming years, whereby pension is possible from the age of 58. The wage negotiations were ‘constructive’ and that resulted in a breakthrough today.

Originally Verlinden had obtained an envelope of 100 million euros per year after the actions, but that was increased to 120 million euros. The unions calculated that this budget means an average salary increase of 70 euros net per staff member.

There is also an additional envelope for teleworking compensation, a second negotiation phase in 2024 and the end-of-career scheme. Negotiations will continue on Thursday. The trade unions are prepared to approach their members with these achievements. They can approve or reject a possible final agreement.
