Breakthrough in Lunar Research: Multi-layer Graphene Discovered in Chang’e 5 Samples Could Revolutionize Synthesis Techniques

Multi-layer graphene was found in samples collected at the Chang’e 5 lunar mission. Chinese experts claim that this discovery could lead to new, better ways to synthesize this material.

A study published in the “National Science Review” showed that multilayer graphene was naturally formed in the soil of the moon. They were discovered by a team of researchers from Jilin University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in a sample of lunar reolith measuring approximately 2.9 mm by 1.6 mm.

Research on lunar soil samples

According to scientists, about 1.9 percent interstellar carbon can be in the form of graphene, which has a shape and structure as a result of its creation process.

First, researchers identified an iron compound that is important for graphene formation in a carbon-rich sample. Then, using advanced microscopic technologies, it was confirmed that the carbon in the sample was in the form of graphene “flakes” with two or seven layers.

Scientists suggest that this type of graphene could have been created by volcanic activity in the early history of the moon. This process was probably driven by the solar wind, which stirred up lunar regolith and iron-rich minerals, changing the structure of carbon atoms.

At the same time, researchers note that meteorite impacts, which create extremely high temperature and pressure conditions, could also have contributed to the formation of graphene.

On Earth, graphene is of great interest due to its unique optical, electrical and mechanical properties.
