Frankfurt – When the cells of a tumor migrate from their place of origin to other organs and form tumors there, it is called metastasis.
They can also occur when the original tumor has already been surgically removed, which is often a great disgrace for the patient. However, the researchers have now found a possible cause for the development of the metastases.

According to a statement on Monday (Oct.24), researchers from the German Cancer Research Center of the Mannheim Medical School have discovered why cancer metastases form after a tumor is removed.
According to the results, the primary tumor produces messenger substances that suppress the growth of metastases. However, as soon as the tumor is removed, the messenger substances are no longer produced. This causes the metastases to start growing.

Scientists also discovered the ANGPLT4 substance. This is a substance that promotes the growth of a tumor locally, but splits into two other substances in the bloodstream. One of these substances, in turn, suppresses the growth of metastases.
The new results were established in a study with mice. The researchers now want to investigate the substance further, as proper use could mean huge benefits for the treatment of patients.

- Cancer: If there are errors in cell division, growths and swellings can develop, these are called tumors. They are divided into benign and malignant. Benign tumors are spatially limited and separated from the surrounding tissue by a capsule.
- Krebs: Malignant tumors are called cancer. They grow uncontrollably in other tissues and can also damage surrounding tissues and organs.
- metastasis: Secondary growths of a malignant tumor are called metastases. They form in other parts of the body than where the tumor originated, thus spreading the cancer. What is particularly dangerous about metastases is that they are initially very small and are only recognized when they have reached a certain size.

Malignant tumors are among the most common causes of death in Germany. It is therefore extremely important to pay attention to the early symptoms of cancer. The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better the treatment options.
