Breakthrough Discovery: Hormone GDF15 Identified as Cause of Severe Morning Sickness in Pregnancy

Anyone who hangs over the toilet in the first quarter of her pregnancy now knows that the hormone GDF15 (an abbreviation for ‘growth differentiation factor’)) is to blame for that. Women who naturally produce little GDF15 experience the most severe complaints, researchers from Cambridge University and others report in the authoritative scientific journal Nature.

About 80 percent of pregnant women experience morning sickness, in 2 percent of cases the complaints are so serious that they can lead to hospital admission, for example due to dehydration and weight loss.

The scientists involved hope that this discovery can prevent hospital admissions in the future. For example, women who naturally produce little GDF15 could be administered the hormone before their pregnancy.

“Most women who become pregnant experience nausea at some point. That’s annoying enough, but for some women it is even worse,” says one of the researchers tegen The Guardian. “It even makes them so sick that they need treatment. Now that we think we know why, we can hopefully prevent it in the future.”

Kim had a horror birth, and therefore gave birth the second time wearing VR glasses. In this video you can see if that helped:
