The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning on a popular bar street in the Spanish resort town. The victim was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, while the suspect was detained by police. The incident has shocked locals and other holidaymakers in the area, as violence is rare in the popular tourist spot. Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
An Irish national has been arrested in the Spanish holiday resort of Benidorm, following an altercation which left another Irish man seriously injured. The attack occurred at a holiday apartment complex in the Rincon de Loix area, on Wednesday. The victim sustained a severe stab wound to his shoulder, but is now out of danger. The knifeman, aged 20, has been taken into custody by the local police, and is currently under investigation.
The reasons behind the fight have not yet been clarified; both men were staying in the same apartment complex, and it is not known if they knew each other. The weapon used in the attack was an eight-inch bladed knife, which has been retrieved by the Spanish police as evidence. The incident, which occurred at lunchtime, is still under investigation. It is unclear if the suspect has already faced a remand or bail hearing.
Whilst Benidorm is a popular destination for tourists, there have been previous incidents which have led to the deaths of holidaymakers. The stabbing of a 68-year-old Irishman last November, is one such example. The man suffered multiple stab wounds to his head, chest, abdomen, and left leg, and passed away several hours later in hospital. A 62-year-old British man, described as the victim’s flatmate, was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and grievous bodily harm, following the incident. The accused also suffered stab wounds and was put under police guard whilst in hospital.
It is not yet clear whether this British man has been indicted in relation to his role in the attack, following the victim’s subsequent death.
Benidorm, located on the east coast of Spain, attracts millions of tourists each year. The resort is known for its beaches, lively nightlife, and entertaining cabaret shows. The city also caters to the needs of a diverse range of holidaymakers, with amenities such as theme parks, water parks, and golf courses. However, incidents like the recent stabbing will cause concern for anyone considering a holiday in the area.
The Spanish authorities have reiterated that they will maintain a strong presence in the Benidorm area, in a bid to keep order and protect tourists. Plans have been put in place to increase police patrols due to the recent surge in crime. In addition, the city is in the process of installing security cameras throughout the town, to aid the police in their quest to reduce criminal activity.
Despite its issues with crime, Benidorm continues to be a popular destination. Tourists are advised to take the usual precautions, and remain vigilant at all times. Simple advice like not taking large amounts of cash with them when they go out, and avoiding quieter streets and alleyways late at night, can help holidaymakers to stay safe. A good rule of thumb is to use common sense when in unfamiliar surroundings, and to always be cautious around strangers.
