Swiss will adopt sanctions European Union and freeze Russian assets that have not stopped invading Ukrainethe Swiss government said on Monday (28/2).
“Taking into account Russia’s continuing military intervention in Ukraine, the Federal Consul took the decision on February 28 to adopt the sanctions packages imposed by the European Union on February 23 and 25,” the Swiss government said in a statement.
Switzerland will also immediately impose financial sanctions on President Vladimir Putin, PM Mikhail Mishustin, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“Switzerland reiterates its solidarity with Ukraine and its people, and will deliver humanitarian assistance to those who have fled to Poland,” the government statement continued.
Swiss President Ignazio Cassis had stated yesterday that it is very possible for Switzerland to follow the steps of the European Union in repelling Russia’s attacks.
Previously, Switzerland had always hesitated to take a stand.
On the one hand, they want to maintain solidarity with western countries for Russia’s violations of international law. While on the other hand, Switzerland’s history as a country that has always taken a neutral stance can make them take a position as a mediator.
But Switzerland has been under constant pressure in recent days to side with western countries and impose tough sanctions on Moscow.
As of Monday (24/2), Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is still continuing, even though the two countries are negotiating to find a resolution.
According to a report by the UN agency, more than 100 civilians were killed in the attacks by the Red Bear country, while 500,000 people were displaced.
