Lately I believe less and less that the status quo can be broken in a mature, polished way.
Just when you believe that the Netherlands is done with slippery career politicians who play the popular regular guest on talk shows, the CDA hoists Hennie Mottenbal to the throne. You may think it’s childish to corrupt his name, but lately I’ve become less and less convinced that the status quo can be broken in a mature, polished way.
On Monday Hennie sat at the table with the BNNVARA talk program Van Roosmalen & Groenteman. Marcel and Gijs put on a wonderful show, although the person next to me on the couch noted that they were sharper at Talpa last summer.
Now with someone like Hennie, who went out of his way to be the perfect talk show guest, you hardly need any sharpness.
As the broadcast progressed, Marcel and Gijs leaned further back. They only had to listen to how Mottenbal followed one metacommunicative comment – ‘I won’t say anything unkind about that Omtzigt video because you’ll soon be ripping something off of me too’ – after yet another quip. The CDA party leader was truly a by-the-book talk show guest.
He himself was perfectly aware of this, or let me put it another way: Hennie Mottenbal was very good at hiding the fact that he thought he was a talk show guest by the book. This made me annoyed with him and unconsciously started looking for a nickname to make fun of him in a column.
‘Mothball’ is well chosen, because Hennie Jan tries to copy Peter Balkenende. In November 2006, just before the elections, the stiff-looking CDA prime minister suddenly delivered one gossip after another at the table at De Wereld Draait Door. We found that refreshing and fun, Balkenende joked that Matthijs had at least eight seats together that evening.
Hennie has pulled Jan Peter Balkenende’s suit out of the mothballs, let us pray that the voter does not fall for it. Of course, I am not at all confident about this.
