The attacker was wounded and detained, Moldovan police said. The Ministry of the Interior announced that the shooting took place after a foreign citizen was denied entry into the country.
President Maija Sandu said the two dead were a border guard and an airport security official.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the suspect was a Russian citizen who took the hostages and led them into a room.
Video from the scene shows people being evacuated from the building. All flights to and from Chisinau airport were suspended.
