The 2023 NFL season has officially begun: There are a total of 272 games in the regular season – and many a record in NFL history could be shaken. Most yards, touchdowns, sacks, interceptions: SPOX shows the most important single-game records, i.e. the records within a game.
NFL Single Game Records: Longest Play
The first to complete a 109-yard play was Antonio Cromartie of the San Diego Chargers. On November 4, 2007, he carried a missed field goal against the Vikings from his own back into the opposing end zone. Jamal Agnew from the Jacksonville Jaguars later did this against the Arizona Cardinals in September 2021.
Statistically speaking, a longer play or a longer touchdown is not possible: the length of the field is 100 yards and the end zone is ten yards deep. However, the NFL doesn’t round up, so a 110-yard play would mean a touchback – the player would already be out of bounds.
NFL single-game records: Longest kickoff return
Cordarrelle Patterson carried a kickoff return from his own end zone over 109 yards for a touchdown for the Minnesota Vikings on October 27, 2013 against the Green Bay Packers.

NFL Records in a Game: Most Passing Yards
Incredible, but this record is over 70 years old: Norm Van Brocklin set it with 554 yards. On September 28, 1951, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback achieved this mark against the New York Yanks (not a typo!).
The “modern” record of the Super Bowl era is held by Matt Schaub, who managed 527 yards for the Houston Texans against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012, just like Warren Moon did for the Houston Oilers in 1990.
NFL records in a game: Most passing touchdowns
The record is seven. Eight players have achieved this, most recently Drew Brees on November 1, 2016 for the New Orleans Saints in a 52:49 win over the New York Giants. Peyton Manning, Nick Foles, George Blanda and Sid Luckman had previously made it. That was the first in 1943.
NFL Records in a Game: Most Rushing Yards
On November 4, 2007, Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings) rushed for 296 yards against the San Diego Chargers. He scored three touchdowns in the 35:17 win – and recorded an incredible 253 rushing yards in the second half. He carried the ball 30 times. Fun fact: His longest run that day was 64 yards.

So far, two players have managed six scores in one game. The first was Ernie Nevers on November 28, 1929 for the Chicago Cardinals against the Bears, and the second was Alvin Kamara (New Orleans Saints) on December 25, 2020 against the Minnesota Vikings. The Saints ultimately won 52-33, with Kamara recording 155 yards on 22 rushing attempts.
NFL records in a game: Most touchdown receptions
Three players in NFL history have caught five touchdowns in one game, including perhaps the best receiver ever: Jerry Rice achieved the feat for the San Francisco 49ers on October 14, 1990 against the Atlanta Falcons. Bob Shaw (1950) and Kellen Winslow (1981) also made it.
NFL Records in a Game: Most Receiving Yards
Willie “Flipper” Anderson once had an incredible 336 yards (15 catches). Anderson set the record in November 1989 for the LA Rams against the New Orleans Saints. The Rams ultimately won 20:17 in overtime. In second and third place are Calvin Johnson with 329 yards (2013 for the Detroit Lions) and Stephone Paige with 309 yards (1985 for the Kansas City Chiefs). The 300-yard mark was broken a total of six times.
NFL records in a game: Most receptions/passes caught
Brandon Marshall of the Denver Broncos caught an incredible 21 passes for 200 yards from quarterback Kyle Orton against the Indianapolis Colts on December 13, 2009. The joy about this was limited, however, because Indy ultimately won the game 28:16.
NFL records in a game: Most sacks
On November 11, 1990, Derrick Thomas recorded seven sacks for the Kansas City Chiefs against the Seattle Seahawks and QB Dave Krieg – unmatched to this day. Six sacks were recorded in a game four times, including Adrian Clayborn in a 2017 game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys. Amazing: Derrick Thomas is also represented here (1998 against the Raiders).
NFL records in a game: Most sacks by a quarterback
Three quarterbacks recorded an impressive twelve sacks in one game. The last time they had to swallow Donovan McNabb was on September 30, 2007 against the Giants – and then lost 3:16. His predecessors: Bert Jones (1980) and Warren Moon (1985).
NFL records in a game: Most fumbles
Glen Dawson, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, lost the ball seven times on November 15, 1964 against the San Diego Chargers. In the Super Bowl era, a total of four quarterbacks had six fumbles in one game, most recently Chad Pennington in the jersey New York Jets in 2005 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

NFL records in a game: Most interceptions by a quarterback
Jim Hardy, please step forward! The Chicago Cardinals quarterback threw eight picks on September 24, 1950 against the Philadelphia Eagles. To his credit: A week later he scored six touchdown passes. The “modern” NFL record is held by Ty Detmer of the Detroit Lions. He threw seven interceptions in a 14:24 win against the Cleveland Browns in 2001.

According to Pro Football Reference, there are 20 players in the history of the NFL who were able to intercept four passes in a game. There have been six in the Super Bowl era (since 1966), most recently DeAngelo Hall for Washington on October 24, 2010 against the Chicago Bears and quarterback Jay Cutler.
NFL single-game records: Longest field goal
Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens set a new record against the Detroit Lions on September 26, 2021 – a field goal from 66 yards! With the clock running out, his kick, which bounced off the post and into the net, decided the game and gave the Ravens a 19:17 win.
NFL Records in a Game: Most Field Goals
The most field goals in a game were once scored by Rob Bironas, who sank eight kicks for the Tennessee Titans against the Houston Texans on October 21, 2007. Bironas scored from 52, 25, 21, 30, 28, 43 and 29 yards – and in the final seconds also from 29 yards to make it 38:36.
