A week after the New Social Contract (NSC) withdrew from the formation talks in the Netherlands, Pieter Omtzigt’s party still has only 9 seats: a more than 50% reduction compared to the current twenty Chamber seats.

As expected, Geert Wilders’ PVV is benefiting from the situation: that party grew to 49 seats in the latest poll. The PVV currently has 37 parliamentary seats. Last week Omtzigt blew up the negotiations between PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB. Right-wing voters blame him for this: according to pollster I&O, they accuse Omtzigt of being indecisive, not keeping promises and playing games.
Omtzigt’s rating – 7.6 in August – has dropped to 5.5. Disappointed NSC voters are largely switching to the PVV, mainly to send the signal that they want a right-wing cabinet with the PVV, according to the research agency.
Formation
More than half of Dutch voters view the breakdown in formation negotiations negatively (53 percent). Those who voted in November for negotiating partners PVV (73 percent), BBB (68 percent), VVD (71 percent) and NSC (58 percent) are particularly disappointed. One in five voters is happy that the formation has stalled, these are mainly left-wing voters.
Omtzigt announced on Tuesday that he may be willing to tolerate a right-wing cabinet. He imposes all kinds of conditions on this. According to the NSC leader, “real steps must be taken towards better governance and social security”. But Omtzigt does not want to sit down with PVV, VVD and BBB to negotiate about this for the time being.
