Israeli tanks move in northern Israel near the Israel-Lebanon border, Monday, September 30, 2024.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEIRUT – Israeli soldiers opened fire on three positions under the control of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Thursday. UN news he confirmed the attack and said UNIFIL headquarters was fired upon by Israeli Merkava tanks.
Reuters The source said UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura was one of the places that were burned. The watchtower at the main army base in Naqoura was said to have been a target for shelling by Israeli Merkava tanks.
Two UNIFIL peacekeepers were reported to have been injured, but not seriously, in the incident. There were no casualties in the other two incidents – one on Wednesday and another on Thursday. In both cases, UNIFIL positions came under Israeli fire, the sources said.
There are currently around 11 thousand soldiers joining the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon. Indonesia contributed the largest number of troops, approximately 1,200 personnel.
One of the posts guarded by the TNI is located in Naqoura, where the Israeli attack took place. The post was named Camp Sudirman and was reported to have been hit by an Israeli attack in October 2023. The TNI later clarified that an Israeli mortar fell about one kilometer from the post. There has been no information from the TNI about the latest attack on Israel this Thursday.
Hezbollah earlier said it had targeted an Israeli tank with missiles as it moved towards the border area of Ras al-Naqoura, before hitting Israeli troops with a salvo of missiles as the soldiers try to pull wounded soldiers out of the area.
UNIFIL said on Sunday it was “deeply concerned about recent activities” by the Israeli military near peacekeeping positions in southwestern Lebanon.
The statement did not provide details, but said the action was dangerous and “unacceptable if it jeopardizes the safety of UN peacekeepers carrying out tasks mandated by the Security Council”.
In a letter to the Israeli military dated October 3 and seen by Reuters, UNIFIL objected to Israeli military vehicles and soldiers placing themselves “close” to UN positions, “thus increasing safety and security UNIFIL personnel and locations at risk”.
