OJ Simpson is dead. As his family confirms, the former NFL professional died as a result of a serious illness.
Former NFL star OJ Simpson has died of complications from cancer at the age of 76. His family confirmed this.
“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” his family wrote on the “X” platform. He was surrounded by his family members in his last moments.
OJ Simpson: Illustrious Football Career
On the football field, Simpson was considered an exceptional player for large parts of his career. In college, he dominated at the University of Southern California and won the Heisman Trophy in 1968.
The Buffalo Bills selected him first overall in the 1969 NFL Draft. In his NFL career, Simpson, who also played for the San Francisco 49ers, amassed over 10,000 rushing yards, and in 1973 he broke the 2,000-yard mark in the then usual 14 games of the season. He received the MVP award that year.
In total, he was elected to the Pro Bowl in six seasons and was named to the Hall of Fame in 1985. Two years earlier he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
OJ Simpson: Multiple criminal trials
In a world-famous circumstantial trial in 1995, Simpson was acquitted of the charge of stabbing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.
Previously, his escape as the main suspect in a white Ford Bronco in front of 20 police cars in Beverly Hills was broadcast live on television. Three years later, however, he was found guilty in a civil case and ordered to pay $33.5 million in compensation to the victims’ families.
In 2008, Simpson was also sentenced to 33 years in prison for an armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel, but was released early for good behavior. He spent the last seven years of his life at large
He also made a career as an actor, for example in the “The Naked Gun” films.
