Breaking News: Former Minister of Information of the Suharto Era, Harmoko, Dies

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Minister of Information in the era of President Soeharto, Harmoko, died on Sunday 4 July 2021.

"Innalillahi wa innailaihi rojiun telah meninggal dunia Bapak H. Harmoko bin Asmoprawiro pada hari Minggu 4 Juli jam 20:22 WIB di RSPAD Gatot Soebroto. Mohon dimaafkan segala kesalahan beliau dan mohon doanya insya Allah beliau husnul khotimah. Aamiin," demikian pesan yang diperoleh Tempo.

Putra Harmoko, Dimas Azisoko, membenarkan kabar duka ini. "Mohon dimaafkan segala kesalahan beliau dan mohon doanya insya Allah amal ibadah beliau diterima Allah SWT dan husnulkhatimah," kata Dimas lewat pesan singkat.

Harmoko diketahui sudah sakit sejak beberapa tahun lalu. Pada Mei 2021 lalu, Dimas mengatakan kondisi kesehatan ayahnya kian menurun lantaran usia yang sepuh. Ketika itu Dimas menyebut sang ayah sudah tak bisa berkomunikasi.

Harmoko is a Golkar politician who has served as Minister of Information Indonesia during the New Order. He was also the Chairman of the MPR during the reign of BJ Habibie.

Harmoko was born in Patianrowo, Nganjuk, East Java, February 7, 1939. Harmoko is known as Suharto’s right-hand man. However, he was also the one who suggested Suharto resign from the presidency. This was conveyed by Harmoko, who at that time served as Chairman of the DPR/MPR, on May 18, 1998.
