Donald Trump is accused of rape and defamation by a former journalist and the possible pecuniary sentence of the former president is now in the hands of the popular jury
The prosecution and defense presented this Monday the Closing arguments in the civil trial against Donald Trump in New York, accused of rape and defamation by an ex-journalist and now the eventual pecuniary sentence of the ex-president was left in the hands of the popular jury.
E. Jean Carroll, 79, sued Trump last year alleging that he raped her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s. The former Elle magazine columnist also claims Trump defamed her after she went public with his accusation in a book in 2019.
The jury will begin deliberating this Tuesday if he agrees with Carroll who is suing Trump for damages for an undetermined amount for this fact that, as he acknowledged in the trial, it has prevented her from having a love life again.
In presenting its closing arguments, the Carroll’s lawyer urged the jury in federal court in Manhattan to hold Trump accountable for what happened.
“Nobody, not even a former president, is above the law“said Roberta Kaplan.
The defense reminded the jury that her client was questioned “for more than two days, and answered every questionand in particular the reasons why she had not screamed” during the alleged rape more than 25 years ago.
Trumpwho has repeatedly denied the allegations, did not appear in court during the trial.
But in the interrogation video excerpts to which he was submitted last October by the prosecution lawyer, disclosed last Friday, said that “It is the most ridiculous and disgusting story. Everything is a lie”and called Carroll “sick”.
He reiterated that he did not know his accuser despite the fact that both appear smilingalong with their respective partners, in a photo presented at the trial taken before their alleged meeting in 1996, in which the tycoon mistook Carroll for his ex-wife Marla Maples.
“He was exactly his type”
Besides, referred to Carroll as a woman who “wasn’t (his) type“.
“The Truth Is” Carroll “he was exactly his type”Kaplan said however.
Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told the six men and three women on the jury that “they want you to hate them enough to ignore the facts”in an offensive statement that lasted 2 and a half hours, during which he highlighted inconsistencies and a lack of material evidence.
He acknowledged that Donald Trump could have referred in a “crude” way or “rude” to women, but that’s not “turn an incredible fact into credible” and appealed to the “common sense” of the jury because, according to him, if Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll “They would have arrested him immediately”.
Carroll “never went to the police because it never happened”He settled and thinks that it is more of a machination so that Carroll would sell his book better.
The writer acknowledged during the trial that she had not gone to the police or the hospital after the rape. “I published the story not because I was writing the book” but because of the movement #MeToo emerged as a result of reports of attacks by the then film producer Harvey Weinstein, sentenced to several years in prison.
“It took me a long time to realize that staying silent doesn’t work”said.
He The case is one of several legal challenges facing the tycoon 76-year-old Republican, who seeks to return to the White House in the 2024 elections.
Last month pleaded not guilty in a criminal case related to a payment of black money to buy the silence of a porn star just before the 2016 election.
Trump is also under investigation for his efforts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election. in the southern state of Georgia, his alleged mishandling of classified documents taken from the White House and his involvement in the assault on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021.
