Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Malaysian politics is hot. This time Anwar Ibrahim is said to be the new prime minister of Malaysia.
The Malaysian opposition leader insisted he had obtained a “strong majority” of lawmakers to form the new government. He is even looking for an audience with the King of Malaysia, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, to formalize his appointment as prime minister.
Anwar mentioned that he needed the king’s approval to replace the current prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin. He said PM Muhyiddin’s government had fallen.
“No, four, five or six (parliamentary votes) but the majority,” he said as written Malaysia Kini, Wednesday (23/9/2020).
“The government led by (prime minister) Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen. I will get more information after facing the Sultan in the near future. God willing,” he said.
The opposition leader’s claim came less than seven months after Muhyiddin came to power. Muhyiddin became PM after the political turmoil that led to the collapse of Mahathir Mohamad’s government.
Currently the National Bond coalition led by PM Muhyiddin has 113 votes out of 222 parliamentary votes. However, Anwar is said to have secured 123 seats.
Anwar, the local media said the party received votes of Malays National Organization (UMNO). Muhyiddin himself will give a special speech on this matter at 14.30 local time.
