We’ve been very hot these last few weeks and we’ll have to wait a little longer before putting our summer things in the closet. In Eure-et-Loir, as in other French departments, the month of September was the hottest ever recorded since temperature records have been kept, around eighty years!
September 2023 should break all heat records, announces Météo France
Looking closely at the maximum temperatures, recorded during the highest hours of the afternoon, the average is 26.3°C for the month of September. That is a difference of 5°C compared to last year. “According to seasonal norms, we should rather be around twenty degrees,” notes Christophe Mertz, forecaster at Météo News. It was even hotter in September than during the rest of the summer: the average maximum in July was 25.5°C, and that in August was 24.7°C. “For the last two months, it was a rather normal summer in Eure-et-Loir, with sometimes very slight excess temperatures,” continues the forecaster.
A record also for October
At the Chartres station, the hottest day remains September 8, with an all-time high temperature of 35.5°C for this time of year. The same day, Châteaudun showed 35.2°C, Bonneval, 35.7°C.
In the entire department, it was in Houx that it was the hottest, with 36.9°C recorded the next day, September 9. From September 5 to 10, six days of heatwave were recorded, with more than 34°C recorded. Historic temperatures, and an exceptional situation, which no longer really surprise the forecaster.
“We are less and less surprised. We must expect this type of drift more and more often, these are the most important markers of global warming. If, during the summer, the Centre-Val de Loire region was a little away from the big heat waves, it was more affected by those of September, more concentrated in the center of the country.

Weather: there had not been such a rainy July in Eure-et-Loir since 2001
In question ? “An anticyclone that stays in place. We would need more marked low pressures for it to move.” And it’s holding up. “If we observe a little weakness this Tuesday and Wednesday, conditions will become sunny again for the weekend with temperatures going up to 26°C for Sunday. Overall, during the first part of October, it will be summer again.”
October is also following the same path as September, with 29.8°C recorded for the day of Monday 2 in Chartres.
It’s also a record: we’ve never been so hot, either, at this time of autumn.
