Construction of the Belmont Park Arena, the New York Islanders’ new amphitheater, had to be halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to halt all non-essential construction work, the Belmont Park site had to be temporarily abandoned, the team confirmed on Friday evening.
The new “Isles” house, located in Elmont, Nassau County, was originally due to be completed in time for the start of the 2021-2022 season.
“We support Governor Cuomo’s efforts to eliminate the COVID-19 virus,” President and CEO Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. “He was an important person behind the construction of the Belmont Park Arena.”
“The progress of the work since the ground breaking has been incredible, and credit must be given to the construction workers who have been there every day. These workers are part of our community, and we love knowing that they are safe and healthy. ”
Since the start of the 2018-2019 season, the Islanders played their games at home sometimes at the Nassau Coliseum, sometimes at the Barclays Center.
