Bread has never been this expensive in Europe, Eurostat European statistical office said on Monday. Its price has risen more than general inflation. Last August, bread was on average 18% more expensive than the previous year. Overall inflation in Europe was 10% in August.
In Belgium, the increase in the price of bread is 13% in one year, which is below the European average. The smallest increase is observed in France (less than 10%) and the highest in Hungary, with an increase of over 60%.
To explain the phenomenon, Eurostat focuses on the invasion of Russia in Ukraine which has shaken the world market for cereals, wheat, oil and fertilizers, causing the prices of these products to explode.
