Brazil’s X blockade will not be an individual decision: Supreme Court

Brasilia. Judge Nunes Marques of the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) decided on Thursday to refer to the Plenum two lawsuits questioning the suspension of the social network X in the country, determined on August 30 by Judge Alexandre de Moraes and ratified on Monday by the First Chamber.

Marques gave the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the Federal Attorney General’s Office (AGU) five days to respond to the requests from the Novo party and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) that question the decision.

The magistrate said that blocking the virtual platform is a delicate matter that requires prudence on the part of the STF, so no individual decision will be made.

According to a poll, Brazilians are divided over Judge De Moraes’ order to ban the network in the country.

A slight majority of respondents believe the judge is right in his dispute with billionaire owner of X, Elon Musk, but the fines imposed on VPN (virtual private network) users and the freezing of Starlink accounts are perceived as “abusive”.

Pollster AtlasIntel said 50.9 percent of respondents on Sept. 3 and 4 disagreed with De Moraes’ decision to suspend the platform in the country, while 48.1 percent agreed and 0.9 percent could not answer.

As for who was right in the public dispute between De Moraes and Musk, however, 49.7 percent sided with the judge, while 43.9 percent backed the billionaire. 5.4 percent chose not to take sides.

In this context, Brazilians have begun to emigrate from Musk’s social network.

In the first three days since the shutdown, Bluesky (developed by Jack Dorsey, creator of the old Twitter) registered more than two million new users – it had 5.6 million worldwide until then – making Portuguese the most widely used language on the platform, the company told AFP.

Both Bluesky and Threads are currently leading the list of most downloaded apps in Brazil on the Google Play Store.
