Brasilia –
Government United States of America (US) denounces President Brazil, Jair Bolsonarowhich declared ‘solidarity’ for Russia when visiting the country. Bolsonaro’s declaration of solidarity came at a time when Western countries were concerned about the deployment of Russian troops near the border Ukraine.
“The time when the President of Brazil expressed solidarity with Russia, as Russian troops prepare to launch attacks on Ukrainian cities, could not be worse,” the US State Department said in a statement. ReutersFriday (18/2/2022).
“This undermines international diplomacy meant to prevent a strategic and humanitarian catastrophe, as well as Brazil’s own calls for a peaceful resolution to the crisis,” the statement added.
Brazil’s Foreign Ministry and Bolsonaro’s spokesman have yet to comment on the US criticism. The US criticism was seen as an unusually harsh critique of the Brazilian government, which is usually on good terms with the US government.
Bolsonaro is also known to be a strong ideological ally of the former President Donald Trump. But relations between the two countries cooled down under the President’s administration Joe Bidenamid disputes over climate change and other issues.
During a visit to Moscow on Wednesday (16/2) local time, Bolsonaro declared himself “in solidarity with Russia”, without elaborating. The statement was delivered next to President Vladimir Putin.
Bolsonaro reiterated the issue of solidarity in a joint statement with Putin.
“We stand in solidarity with all countries that desire and fight for peace,” Bolsonaro said in the joint statement.
